Meeting Customer Requirements with
Meeting Customer Requirements with
Intelligent Ethernet Services
Intelligent Ethernet Services
• L2 switches are limited to the processing and forwarding of L2 info
• Multilayer switches can look deeper into the frame => intelligent decisions
based on L3 and/or L4 info
• Examples of why this is useful:
Preserve bandwidth by limiting traffic based on a user’s IP address
Preserve bandwidth by limiting traffic based on applications using a constant TCP/UDP port number
– web browsing, ERP applications, etc.
Prevent access to network resources based on user’s IP address
Classify and marking of traffic based on L3 QoS (DSCP)
Customer Requirements that require a multilayer switch:
• Preventing access to sensitive network resources (Access Control Lists)
• Preserving bandwidth by limiting certain users to a smaller portion of the available
bandwidth (rate-limiting)
• Advanced Quality of Service by prioritizing traffic by marking the Layer 3 QoS field
(Differentiated Services Code Point)
