This sample layout is the Cisco reference design shown from the rear view. If a power supply is needed
to convert AC to –48 Vdc for the 10K, it is usually on the bottom. No gaps are required between the
devices, because all air-flow is front-to-back and NEBS compliant.

Protect interface 5/1/0 is protecting 8/1/0 and 5/1/1 is protecting 8/1/1. Using Slot 5/1 for Protect is easier
for wiring since the Protect header of the RF Switch is located in the center.
Tip: If some US ports are combined for a dense-mode combining scenario, they could be combined at the
CMTS to free up some US ports on the RF Switch. This means, instead of taking one reverse and
splitting to feed 2 US ports before the Switch, do it after the Switch and before the CMTS.
