IP Telephony and User Mobility support with Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series 10/100 and 10/
100/1000 Ethernet Interface Modules
TheCisco Catalyst 6500series is alead element inCisco’s Architecture forVoice, VideoandIntegrated Data,AVVID)
providing a number of IP telephony and network security features for the Enterprise.
The Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series delivered the industry’s first Ethernet switching modules that provided inline power
for converged data and voice traffic as well as other inline powered devices, such as wireless access points. Several
Catalyst 6500 series interface modules support inline power or “power over Ethernet” on each interface port,
allowing customers to build campus multiservice data and voice networks for wiring closets with the following
features:
• Inline power—Provides 48-volt DC power for Cisco Inline Power and IEEE 802.3af standard inline power (post
ratification) over standard Category 5 unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) cable up to 100 meters for IP phones and
wireless access points
• Phone discovery—Detects the presence of an IP phone and supplies inline power automatically
• Auxiliary VLAN using 802.1Q—Segments IP phones and data endpoints into separate logical networks
automatically
• AutoQoS—Simplifies the task of configuring QoS mechanisms for IP telephony and more
• Identity Based Networking Services (IBNS)—enables greater security while simultaneouslyoffering cost-effective
management of changes throughout the organization
Cisco Catalyst Inline Power and IEEE 802.3af Inline Power
Using existing Category 5 UTP installations, the Inline Power feature enables network administrators to control
power distribution from a central location. When Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series switches are configured with
uninterruptiblepower supply (UPS) systems, it ensures that buildingpoweroutageswill not affect network telephony
connections, providing greater network availability.
Enabled by a daughter card for “pay as grow” flexibility, several Catalyst 6500 series 10/100 and 10/100/1000
Ethernet interface modules support the Cisco Inline Power. Once ratified, some of these interface modules will also
support the IEEE 802.3af standard as an additional upgrade option. The Cisco Catalyst Inline Power feature
implementation passes the required domestic and international safety regulations and compliance measures.
Phone Discovery
TheCisco phone discovery feature easesnetworkmanagement burdens by automating theInlinePower feature. With
phone discovery, the Cisco Catalyst switch detects the presence of an IP phone and supplies inline power
automatically, eliminating the need to manually enable ports for inline power. The phone discovery mechanism is
intelligentenough to differentiate between an IP phone andanetwork interface card (NIC), and will not supplyinline
power to NICs or other devices not designed to use inline power. With this feature, network administrators can
depend on automatic and centralized control of inline power that is safe to deploy and maintain.
